Buying a Home EV Charger? Here’s What Actually Matters Before You Spend a Dollar

Making the switch to an EV is the easy part — deciding how to charge it at home is where most new owners get stuck. Between charging levels, amperage ratings, connector types, and a rebate landscape that’s changed a lot in the last couple of years, it’s easy to end up buying based on whichever charger has the best reviews online rather than what your home and vehicle actually need.

Here’s what to actually think through before you buy.

Level 1 vs. Level 2: The Difference Is Bigger Than It Sounds

Every EV comes with a Level 1 cord that plugs into a standard 120V household outlet, but it’s genuinely slow — typically adding only a few kilometres of range per hour. For most daily drivers, that’s not enough to reliably recover a full charge overnight.

Level 2 chargers run on a 240V circuit, the same type used for a stove or dryer, and depending on the amperage, they can add somewhere between roughly 20 and 50 kilometres of range per hour. If you’re driving a normal daily commute, a Level 2 charger is really the only setup that makes home charging practical rather than something you’re constantly working around.

Amperage and Your Electrical Panel

This is the part most first-time buyers skip past, and it’s the one that actually determines your cost. Home Level 2 chargers are commonly available in 32A, 40A, or 48A configurations, and higher amperage means faster charging — but only if your electrical panel has the capacity to support it.

Older homes across Toronto, especially ones with 100A service, may need a panel upgrade or a load management device before a higher-amperage charger can be installed safely. This is worth confirming with a licensed electrician before you buy, not after — a charger that’s more powerful than your panel can support is either an unnecessary expense or, worse, an installation that gets flagged and delayed.

Hardwired vs. Plug-In, and Why It Has to Be ESA-Approved

Chargers generally come in two styles: hardwired directly into your electrical panel, or plug-in units that connect to a dedicated outlet (commonly a NEMA 14-50). Plug-in units offer some flexibility if you ever want to relocate the charger or take it with you, while hardwired units are often required at higher amperages and tend to be the more permanent, code-preferred option.

Either way, in Ontario this isn’t a DIY project. Any home EV charger installation needs to be done by an ESA-licensed electrician and meet Electrical Safety Authority requirements. It’s tempting to treat this like installing a smart plug, but it’s a dedicated high-amperage circuit — getting it done right the first time matters both for safety and for your home insurance.

Connector Compatibility Isn’t as Complicated as It Looks

With Tesla’s NACS connector now being adopted across most major automakers for newer EVs, a lot of buyers assume they need to shop around for a charger that matches their vehicle’s port. In practice, this matters less than it sounds like it should — nearly every home Level 2 charger sold today still uses the J1772 connector, and NACS-equipped vehicles typically come bundled with a J1772 adapter. Focus on amperage and features first; connector compatibility is rarely the deciding factor.

Indoor vs. Outdoor Rating

If your charger is going in an attached garage, this may not matter much. But a lot of Toronto homeowners are mounting chargers on an exterior wall or in a driveway setup exposed to the elements — and that means checking for a proper outdoor (NEMA 3R or similar) rating.

Smart Features Are Worth Paying For

Most mid-range and higher chargers now come with WiFi connectivity, scheduling, and usage tracking through an app. This isn’t just a nice-to-have — Ontario’s Ultra-Low Overnight rate plan offers significantly cheaper electricity between 11pm and 7am, exactly the window most EV owners are charging in anyway. A charger that can schedule itself to start charging at 11pm instead of whenever you plug in can meaningfully cut your electricity cost over a year, with zero effort after the initial setup.

Don’t Assume There’s a Rebate Waiting for You

This trips up a lot of buyers: Ontario does not currently offer a provincial rebate specifically for residential EV charger installation, so the cost falls on the homeowner. There is a federal incentive for the vehicle itself, and some electricity utilities (Toronto Hydro, Alectra, and others) run their own smaller programs from time to time, so it’s worth checking with your specific provider before assuming a rebate exists. Don’t build your budget around an incentive you haven’t actually confirmed is currently active.

What This Means for the Rest of Your Vehicle

A couple of things worth knowing once the charger’s installed and you’re driving an EV day to day. EVs are meaningfully heavier than comparable gas vehicles because of battery weight, and combined with instant torque, that tends to wear tires faster than owners expect.
